In a significant turn of events, Abigail Mor Edan, the youngest U.S. citizen held captive by Hamas, has been returned to Israel, confirmed by President Biden and the Israeli military. Abigail, who tragically lost her parents in Hamas' attacks on Israel last October, marked her fourth birthday in Gaza during captivity.

The release of Abigail, along with 16 others, took place as part of a broader hostage release plan by Hamas. The initial abduction saw an estimated 240 individuals taken during the onslaught on Israel, as confirmed by Israeli authorities.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani conveyed to "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan that Abigail's name had been listed among the hostages slated for release on Sunday.

This release follows earlier phases of liberation, contingent on an agreement between Israel and Hamas. The agreement entailed the release of captive women and children from both sides, a temporary ceasefire, and provisions for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Additionally, displaced Palestinians were given the option to return to their homes in the war-torn northern region of the territory.

President Biden addressed the nation, acknowledging Abigail's release and the harrowing ordeal she faced. He emphasized the unimaginable trauma she endured, having lost both her parents in the attack.

Abigail's great-aunt, Liz Hirsh Naftali, and her cousin, Noa Naftali, expressed their relief and gratitude for her safe return in a statement. They extended their thanks to President Biden and the Qatari government, highlighting the significance of bringing all hostages home and the necessity of continued efforts in this regard.

During an interview with "CBS Mornings," Liz Hirsh Naftali and Noa Naftali shared details of the tragic incident. Abigail was seized alongside neighbors from her residence at the Kfar Aza kibbutz. While her siblings, aged 6 and 10, survived by hiding in a closet for 14 hours, Abigail's parents perished protecting her during the attack.

The family expressed their readiness to provide Abigail and her siblings the care and support they require after losing their parents. The hope remains that Abigail's return will aid in the healing process for the siblings who witnessed the tragic events of October 7th.
