Measles outbreak grows to seven cases in Washtenaw county; unvaccinated children and adults affected
Washtenaw County in Michigan saw a measles outbreak, as seven cases come to the fore, and many of them were not vaccinated, including both children and adults. The latest came of a child, which health officials considered was due to being exposed at a hospital in Ypsilanti, according to the Washtenaw County Health Department.

Officials warned that measles spreads very fast, especially when people are not vaccinated or have not had the illness before, said Dr. Juan Luis Marquez. Dr. Marquez said that these people should follow public health guidance to the teeth, especially ones exposed. The first of the cases came to light on March 11, as per CBS news, which quoted Washtenaw County health officials.

First case linked to travel

Officials believe the first patient, an adult, likely got infected while traveling in Florida, the health department said. The seven confirmed cases now include two adults, four children aged 5 to 17, and one child under 5 years old, Washtenaw County health officials confirmed. Health officials shared that the infected people visited about a dozen public places in Washtenaw and Wayne counties while they were contagious.

The most recent exposure location added was the emergency room treatment area of Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital in Ypsilanti, during the afternoon and evening of March 21, as stated by CBS News. Measles is highly contagious but can be prevented with vaccination.

Measles symptoms to watch

Common measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, tiny white spots inside the mouth, and a red skin rash. The Washtenaw County Health Department is working with Wayne County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the outbreak and inform the public, officials said, as cited by CBS News.
