McDonald’s CosMc’s shuts down after two-year run, ending bold beverage experiment

McDonald’s is pulling the plug on CosMc’s, its futuristic beverage-focused spinoff, less than two years after launch. The company will phase out CosMc’s pilot locations and mobile app by June 2025. Here’s why McDonald’s is closing CosMc’s and what...

Customers say goodbye to CosMc’s cosmic experience
What started with buzz and curiosity is ending with quiet goodbyes. McDonald’s announced it is closing all CosMc’s locations, wrapping up its short-lived experiment in the premium beverage space. For fans of the whimsical “French Toast Galaxy Latte” or the color-splashed “Island Pick-Me-Up Punch,” the news feels like an early curtain call on something that never got its full moment.

CosMc’s offered something different, a neon-bright, out-of-this-world setting where cold brews met popping boba, and breakfast sandwiches came with vitamin C shots. Launched in Illinois in December 2023, CosMc’s expanded to just four more locations in Texas before the company confirmed the project is ending on a “rolling basis.”

Now, the CosMc’s app and loyalty program will be officially shut down on June 23, 2025, marking the end of what was billed as McDonald’s bold foray into beverage innovation.

Why McDonald’s is closing CosMc’s locations
The decision to close CosMc’s may come as a surprise to some, but it appears to align with McDonald’s original intent for the brand, a limited, small-format pilot to explore new flavors and experiences. In a press release, McDonald’s said the beverage-focused restaurant allowed it to test technologies, operations and products without interfering with its main business.

“What started as a belief that McDonald’s had the right to win in the fast-growing beverage space quickly came to life,” the company stated in a press release. “It allowed us to test new, bold flavors and different technologies and processes – without impacting the existing McDonald’s experience for customers and crew.”

With flavors like Pistachio Swirl Shaken Espresso and vibrant decor filled with celestial imagery, CosMc’s was meant to stand apart from traditional McDonald’s stores. But the company now plans to apply what it learned at CosMc’s to a broader McDonald’s beverage test in the United States, though it remains unclear which drinks might make the cut.

CosMc’s may be shutting down, but its influence could linger. McDonald’s says it will use the “insights gained” from the brand to enhance its existing drink offerings, meaning some of the quirky items could eventually appear in McDonald’s nationwide beverage tests.

Until then, fans still have a few weeks left to redeem any loyalty rewards before they vanish, just like CosMc’s itself.
