Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, was criticized for visiting Ghana during a time when her city was experiencing wildfires. She was in Ghana when the fires began, despite the high fire risk that was known at the time.

Why did Karen Bass leave LA?

She claimed that officials failed to warn her of the dangers, which is why she was absent. While traveling to Africa on behalf of the Biden administration, Karen Bass said she was not cognizant of the widely circulated warnings of the wildfire jeopardies.

She asserted that they must examine every aspect of fire preparation and everything related to it. Karen Bass told Fox 11 that the city's preparation "wasn't what it typically is," as per a report.

She went on to blame everyone but herself, asserted once more that fire officials did not voice any concerns, and informed her that the Santa Ana winds that were held responsible for the fires' spread were normal, as reported by The NY Post.

There was no such level of preparation from the county or the city. Therefore, it didn't go that far for me to say, "Maybe you shouldn't have gone on the trip because something horrible could happen," she added.

Karen Bass went on to say that two investigations were still underway, one focusing on the city's response to the fires and the other on the fires as a whole. She confessed that she felt terribly bad about not being there for both her city and her family, who were also affected by the fires, Bass remarked.

Her explanation sparks backlash

The Palisades Fire began on January 7 and grew during the night, but the mayor did not return to the city until January 8 and was quickly criticized for her refusal to respond to a Sky News reporter's repeated questions when she arrived, as reported by The NY Post.
