Max gets rebranded as HBO Max: Does Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest decision affect subscribers?

Warner Bros. Discovery on Wednesday, May 14, announced the rebranding of its premier streaming platform Max back to its original name -- HBO Max. This change comes hardly two years after the company went on to remove HBO from the brand’s name and simply make it Max.

Both HBO and Max had their own commercial branding separate from each other during this time frame, but they were pitched at industry awards under the 'HBO/Max' label, Variety reported.

Max rebrands as HBO Max: Why does it matter?

According to an official press release, the latest decision was confirmed in New York on Wednesday at the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation.


As per reports, the presentation ceremony was held for ad executives. The move comes just weeks after Max went on to make key changes to its logo in order to make it look quite similar to the original black-and-white HBO scheme.

The rebranding takes place this summer. The company stated that this change will further "drive the service forward," besides amplifying the "uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering." It has also called it a "testament" to its "willingness to keep boldly iterating its strategy and approach".

At Wednesday's event, a presentation was held by Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav, besides others, according to Tom's Guide. Zaslav highlighted that the streaming service's "powerful growth" remains around the company's quality of programming.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming business growth

Warner Bros. Discovery has highlighted how its streaming business has showcased progress in recent times. It stated that the division went on to further improve its profitability by nearly $3 billion in just two years.

The company suggests that its streamer seems right on target to achieve more than 150 million by the end of next year. This comes as it witnessed significant improvement and gained 22 million new subscribers during the past one year.

As of now, it remains to be seen how the rebranding will affect the subscribers. In summer 2025, the Max applications on all devices will get rebranded as HBO Max. For now, there were no announcements regarding changes in prices for the service as well as introduction of any new feature or content.

JB Perrette, President and CEO of Streaming, stated that the company will stay focused around offering "distinct and great" content for adults and families.
