Matchbox Twenty releases ‘Where the Light Goes’; comes as first album in 11 years
Matchbox Twenty’s first song in a decade comes live. The album aims to offer fans something fresh instead of just a nostalgia tour.

By the time Rob Thomas hit the road in 2017 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Matchbox Twenty, he believed the band would never release another album. With five years having passed since their last record, "North," the band members were content with simply touring on their previous hits. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their plans, leading to the postponement of their tour for multiple years.
In 2022, Matchbox Twenty faced health issues among its members and did not feel ready to return to touring. It was during this time that they realized the loyalty of their fans, who had been holding onto their tickets and waiting patiently. This realization prompted the band to reconsider their plans and release new music instead of solely relying on nostalgia.
"Where the Light Goes" became their first album in over a decade, giving fans something fresh to listen to. The decision to step away from the creative process had been based on their perception that they were no longer fully invested in making Matchbox Twenty records. However, reuniting and working together on the album reminded them of the joy they found in collaborating.
Rob Thomas emphasized the genuine love and camaraderie among the band members, describing them as an "easy laugh" who genuinely care about each other.
