Elon Musk is officially serving under President Donald Trump as a special government employee

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has uncovered a startling revelation that could have far-reaching implications for how the US government handles its financial transactions, as per a report.

What’s the missing code?

According to a recent announcement, about $4.7 trillion in payments processed by the Treasury Department were missing a critical tracking code, rendering them almost impossible to trace, reported New York Post.

DOGE posted on X “In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible,” as per New York Post.

The missing tracking code is referred to as the Treasury Account Symbol (TAS), which is generally utilized to associate payments with individual budget line items.

Elon Musk's DOGE takes action

The department, headed by Elon Musk, has been at the forefront of initiatives to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in federal government expenditures, as per reports. This revelation was a huge setback for the Treasury's capability to monitor where and how funds are being spent, reported New York Post.

After that DOGE announced that the use of the TAS code is now mandatory. DOGE said “As of Saturday, this is now a required field, increasing insight into where money is actually going,” as quoted in the report.

Musk commended the change, referring to it as a "major improvement in Treasury payment integrity," as quoted by New York Post. He reiterated that the move was a collective effort by DOGE, the Treasury, and the Federal Reserve, with everyone coming together to provide more oversight of the federal payment system.

DOGE's ongoing efforts for efficiency

In addition to this change, DOGE has been pushing for other significant reforms at the Treasury. For instance, they recently proposed "deleting paper checks", arguing it could save taxpayers up to $750 million annually, as per the report. The Treasury processes over 100 million checks each year, costing about $2.40 per check to maintain, contributing to inefficiencies.

According to DOGE’s latest figures, about $25 billion in tax refunds were delayed or lost in fiscal year 2023 due to issues related to returned or expired checks.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said " DOGE is methodical and it is going to yield big savings,” as quoted by Bloomberg.
