The blaze, which erupted at around 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, forced the evacuation of the 560,000-square-foot industrial complex. What happened at SPS Technologies?

According to the Abington Township Police Department, an explosion was reported inside the SPS Technologies facility before the fire spread. Although all employees were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, officials have urged residents to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is underway by the police and the Abington Township Fire Marshal’s office.

Why were schools closed?

The fire at SPS Technologies released thick smoke and possibly hazardous chemicals into the air. As a precaution, all schools in the Abington and Jenkintown school districts, including private and parochial schools, were closed on Tuesday, February 20, 2025.

Authorities also issued a shelter-in-place order and instructed businesses within a one-mile radius of 301 Highland Ave, Jenkintown, to remain closed until further notice.

SPS Technologies’ background and environmental concerns

SPS Technologies, originally called Standard Pressed Steel Company, has been operating in Jenkintown since 1920. The company manufactures nuts, bolts, and metal fasteners for industries such as aviation and aerospace.

In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fined SPS Technologies $110,000 for violating hazardous waste storage regulations at the Jenkintown facility.

Firefighters continue to work on containing the blaze, and authorities are monitoring air quality for any toxic exposure risks. Officials will provide updates once it is safe to reopen schools and businesses in the area.
