Massive aquarium bursts in Berlin, injured 2

German rescue services reported on Friday that a 16-meter (52-foot) aquarium at a hotel in the heart of Berlin bursted, injuring two people. According to the Berlin fire department, more than 100 fire responders were dispatched to the Radisson Blu in the Mitte district of the German capital to cope with the damage, the origin of which was still unknown.

“The aquarium is damaged, water is leaking. The situation is not clear at the moment" the Berlin fire brigade wrote on Twitter.

According to local media station RBB, there was a tremendous noise at around 5:45 a.m. local time (0445 GMT) and pieces of the hotel front where the aquarium was housed flew onto the street. Berlin police and the city's traffic agency both reported "huge amounts of water" flowing onto the street. Berlin's traffic agency VIZ stated that an extraordinarily significant amount of water had spilled over onto the street outside. Hotel's street, Karl-Liebknecht Strasse, has been blocked off, and the area which is littered with rubble, has been largely sealed off.



The Sea Life aquarium and the "AquaDom," a massive tank that is home to 1,500 different kinds of tropical fish, are both located in the DomAquaree building, which is only 350 metres from Berlin Cathedral. The AquaDom is "the world's largest free-standing circular aquarium," according to the DomAquaree website, and is a well-known tourist destination. One of the delights of the attraction was the 10-minute elevator trip through the aquarium.

According to police on Twitter, buses were sent to the area to give cover for hotel guests exiting the structure while the outside temperature in Berlin hovered around -7 degrees Celsius (19.4 degrees F).
