Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2023: What's Open and What's Closed

The majority of banks, public schools, post offices, government facilities, and most libraries in the Washington, D.C. region will be closed in observance of the federal holiday.

On Monday, January 16, Americans will commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the Civil Rights Movement who was assassinated in 1968. To observe the federal holiday, the majority of banks, public schools, post offices, government buildings, and most libraries will be closed across the D.C. region. For individuals interested in participating, several MLK Day of Service activities is taking place throughout the D.C. region.

Here is a list of the open and closure times for January 16:

Roads:

For the holiday, high-occupancy vehicle limits are waived in Virginia but not in Maryland.

For non-emergency work in streets, alleyways, and sidewalks that are part of the city's right-of-way, the district will suspend construction and work zones. The DC District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will also stop using reversible lanes all around the city.


Transit:

  • The DC Circulator reported that business was as usual.
  • Normal operations are reported by the DC Streetcar.
  • On Saturdays, Metrorail will run its regular schedule.
  • On Saturdays, Metrobus will offer supplemental service.
