Why is Mark Zuckerberg facing backlash now?

Social media is not letting Mark Zuckerberg off the hook after renewed attention fell on his 387-foot superyacht, Launchpad. NDTV detailed the criticism following a viral post on X that showed the vessel in operation, prompting users to question whether Zuckerberg’s lifestyle aligns with his public stance on climate change.

The criticism draws heavily on Zuckerberg’s past condemnation of Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement on climate change. Users accused the Meta CEO of behavior that contradicts his earlier comments about human-driven climate change.

What makes the superyacht controversial?

Launchpad, built by Feadship, reportedly cost $300 million and is powered by four diesel engines capable of reaching speeds of up to 24 knots, according to Yachtworld. The yacht features en suite bedrooms, a beach club, and a convertible indoor pool, underscoring its ultra-luxury status.

The vessel and its support ships frequently go viral online, fueling repeated waves of backlash. In one reported nine-month period beginning in late 2024, the yacht allegedly burned around half a million gallons of diesel fuel before undergoing repairs, reported TCD.

Why are critics calling out billionaire double standards?

The backlash reflects broader frustration with what many view as environmental double standards among the ultra-wealthy. Replies to the viral post echoed sentiments like “Net zero for thee, but not for me,” while also referencing high-profile excesses involving other billionaires, including Jeff Bezos.

An Oxfam report cited in the discussion noted that an average person would take 860 years to generate the same pollution as a single megayacht. Despite the outrage, many commenters expressed resignation, suggesting accountability rarely applies to the ultrarich, as per a report by TCD.
