Mar-a-Lago resort: First hearing of Donald Trump versus US government

The Donald Trump-led front has many problems ahead of them as the former President of the US has been charged with the theft of classified documents. The documents have been marked as classified, and the Trump administration had stocked up on a bunch of them in his Mar-a-Lago home, which is part of the famous golf resort's five-star lodgings, on their way out of the White House.

Trump and his team of lawyers feel that the Biden Administration is creating a lot of unnecessary politics over something that was in the right of the President of the USA’s eyes, which Trump was. Well, the Biden administration feels they indeed were for his eyes while being the President, but he should have handed this back to the White House under some safe keeping where the nation’s secrets are kept and not at his Mar-a-Lago home.

The "classified documents" meant that only a few privileged eyes could see them, not the Mar-a-Lago staff or the ex-president's family members, who were not supposed to do so. Most of the problems lie in the fact that Trump carried the documents and made them his fiefdom, which has irked the current Biden administration.


The judge who is to hear the case belongs to the court of Brooklyn and is known as Judge Raymond Dearie, who is well versed in the law and is a popular jurist. Aileen Cannon, District Judge of Florida, initiated the appointment of the judge in Brooklyn and set a deadline of the end of November. Reports said that Cannon ordered a third-party review after Trump filed a case in Florida that the documents collected be sorted out, which fall under attorney-client privilege and personal items that should not have gone into the hands of the investigators.

Dearie has told Trump either to declare that the documents he holds are declassified already, or that he needs to fall in line and keep them shut.



Judge Dearie said he would not show patience, and any delay tactics that Trump and his team would use would be dealt with severely. Either the documents are classified or personal. If they are marked as classified, Trump will have to agree as such. In that case, what were they doing with Trump in his house after he relinquished the chair?

Trump’s lawyers now have the uphill task of trying to disclose to the court that Trump himself declassified the documents.

Judge Dearie said he would be moving on the case as quickly as possible as he needed to review 11,000 pages of data. The judge has said he knows his role is limited and would stick to the order issued by Judge Cannon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice said it would be sent to the United States Supreme Court if needed. The DOJ wants Judge Cannon to withdraw the hold on the classified documents and prevent them from being presented to the court as evidence.

The next hearing is not yet decided on and awaits the date from Dearie.
