The blast, Machado’s 20th of the season, followed a two-run double by Elias Diaz that broke a 1-1 tie and extended the Padres’ lead. Luis Arraez and Diaz also scored on Machado’s homer, which sealed San Diego’s second consecutive game with a five-run frame.
Wandy Peralta earned the win with a scoreless sixth inning in relief, as the Padres notched their fourth straight victory and extended their cushion over the Reds to three games for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Jackson Merrill opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single to plate Fernando Tatis Jr. The Mets tied it in the fifth on a Starling Marte sacrifice fly after loading the bases with no outs, but missed a chance to take the lead. San Diego reclaimed the advantage in the sixth when Merrill tripled in Arraez.
Padres rookie Ryan Bergert allowed one run over four-plus innings, while Mets starter Sean Manaea was solid through five, giving up just one run. Juan Soto exited early with a foot contusion after fouling a ball off himself in the fourth inning.
With Machado’s late-game heroics and another big inning from the offense, San Diego kept their momentum rolling as the postseason race heats up.
