San Diego Padres star Manny Machado reached a major milestone Monday night, recording his 2,000th career hit with a sharp single off Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.

The historic moment came in the fourth inning off starter Zac Gallen, earning Machado a standing ovation from the Petco Park crowd.

The All-Star slugger singled earlier in the first for hit No. 1,999 and added a solo home run in the eighth - his 15th of the season and 357th of his career.

Machado became the fifth active player and 297th in MLB history to reach 2,000 hits, and just the 12th player to record both 350 home runs and 2,000 hits by age 32.

"Doing it in front of the home crowd definitely is a lot better," Machado said. "Hopefully there’s more."

Padres manager Mike Shildt praised the accomplishment: "Wow, literally hats off. What an accomplishment. He earned it."

Debuting with the Orioles in 2012, Machado logged 977 hits in Baltimore and 73 with the Dodgers before joining the Padres in 2019. He now has 950 hits with San Diego, ranking fifth on the club’s all-time list behind franchise icon Tony Gwynn (3,141).

Though the Padres fell 3-6 to Arizona, Machado’s night stood out as one to remember.
