From a cloth mill to a garden shed
Before Budding's invention, cutting grass usually required a skilled scythe user, which was slow and demanding. Budding had a background in machining, and he was familiar with the rotary shearing machines used in the textile industry. His invention was supported by a business associate. The inventor entered into a contract with his business partner John Ferrabee, a factory owner of Phoenix Iron Works, on May 18, 1830, to take care of the expenses for the patent and manufacturing of the equipment. The patent followed, and soon the first mowers with a 19-inch cutting cylinder were being produced at Ferrabee's factory in Stroud. Budding was reportedly quite self-conscious about the new machine. Local lore, though never fully verified, holds that Budding tested his machine after dark so that people like his neighbors and co-workers would not see him working on it.
From zoo lawns to cricket pitches
Two of the earliest Budding mowers were used at the Zoological Gardens of Regent's Park, London, and the Oxford Colleges. In 1831, John Claudius Loudon, a writer, wrote in his The Gardener's Magazine that the machine, run by two men, could do as much work as six to eight men working with scythes in the zoo. The news spread quickly. Soon, lawns trimmed neatly and evenly became associated with sports like cricket, bowls and other outdoor games that needed a flat playing surface and this is something that scythes could not always provide. Ransomes of Ipswich, which manufactured and marketed Budding's mower, became one of the largest manufacturers of lawn-care equipment.

Nearly 200 years later, Budding's basic idea remains visible in many modern mowers. However, attitudes toward lawn mowing have shifted in recent years. In a study titled 'Ecological and economic benefits of low-intensity urban lawn management' published in the Journal of Applied Ecology in 2020, researchers Chris Watson and colleagues looked into the data collected from lawns in North America and Europe. The meta-analysis found evidence that urban lawns mown less intensely tended to support greater plant and invertebrate diversity, while more intensely mown lawns saw pest species become more common.
Emissions have also emerged as an increasingly important issue. A report from Frontier Group and Environment America, titled 'Lawn Care Goes Electric,' found that gas lawn equipment in the United States produced more than 30 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions in just 2020 alone, which was more than the greenhouse gas emissions of Los Angeles in that particular year. As Grist reported, the same 'Lawn Care Goes Electric' report found that gas-powered lawn equipment released about 21,800 tons of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in 2020, pollution comparable to that from 234 million typical cars over a year. These findings may be one reason for growing interest in electric and battery-operated lawnmowers.
The eco twist millennials are bringing back
Ironically, certain modern trends in lawn maintenance mimic earlier practices better than even Budding's refined machine from 1830 ever did. Initiatives like "No Mow May," organized by the British environmental charity Plantlife, urge people to stop mowing their lawns for an entire month in order to allow the flowers to flourish and attract pollinating insects. It turns out that letting a lawn grow a little wild is not laziness, but a scientifically backed practice that aligns well with the ideas of sustainability, whether that means choosing an electric mower or simply mowing less often on purpose.
Edwin Budding could hardly have imagined that a fix for a cloth-mill problem would later shape cricket grounds, suburban backyards, and climate debates. Through his 1830 patent, Budding offered a practical solution to an everyday problem, and the basic design remains familiar today. What has changed is how we use it: how efficiently we cut grass, how often we mow, and what toll that takes on the environment. The next time you push a mower across your lawn, you are carrying forward an idea from a Gloucestershire textile mill, and quietly joining a much newer conversation about how green spaces should look and feel.
