The next chapter of the Yellowstone universe has officially launched. Marshals, the new spin-off series featuring Luke Grimes, debuted on CBS on Sunday (March 1) and is also streaming on Paramount+. The show follows Kayce Dutton as he seeks a “new beginning” by joining a specialized U.S. Marshals unit in Montana, getting away from ranch phase and into federal law enforcement.

Ahead of the premiere, fans were quick to find that Monica Dutton, featured by Kelsey Asbille, was not present from cast revelations and promotional images. Speculation amplified when the initial trailer clued at a devastating loss in Kayce’s life.

The debut confirmed those fears. Monica passed away following a struggle with cancer, and her death happened off-screen. Viewers later came to know that her disease may have been associated with toxins dumped near a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation, an information that connects her passing to larger, real-world environmental concerns.

Luke Grimes Shares His Heartbreak

After working closely with Asbille for years on Yellowstone, Grimes acknowledged that the creative decision intensely impacted him.

“I was heartbroken for myself and for [Kelsey],” Grimes told TV Insider. “It felt like, ‘I don’t even know what that would look like doing it without her, what that would feel like.’ Kelsey’s become one of my best friends. She’s the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with. She’s down to earth, sweet, and kind to every other actor and the crew.”

As Monica’s passing is a focus point to the new storyline, Grimes felt forced to personally reach out to his longtime co-star before going forward.

“I worked up the courage to call. I didn’t know how she was going to feel about it. I had to see how she was doing. We had a great conversation. In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She’s going to work. That’s not an issue.”

Creator Explains The Creative Decision

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut noted that Monica and Kayce’s narrative on Yellowstone concluded on a hopeful note, making the continuation challenge.

After she and Kayce “had such a beautiful ending” in Yellowstone, Hudnut inquired whether viewers would relate with a stable, content edition of the character.

“We had to shake up his life, to get him off the ranch and into a new position,” Hudnut stated.

He also highlighted that Monica’s passing was meant to reflect a large reality. “Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them,” he described. “We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue. We wanted to be very respectful of that character.”
