Luigi Mangione arrest footage released
A newly released police body-camera footage captures the Dec. 9, 2024, encounter, including officers questioning Mangione about his identity and the identification he was carrying before taking him into custody, as per reports.
The footage also shows what happened later at the police station, where officers searched Mangione and his belongings.
Officers Ask Mangione to Lower His Mask
Mangione was wearing a black jacket, a blue medical mask, and a tan beanie when officers approached him inside the restaurant.They asked him to lower his mask so they could see his face. After looking at him, one officer told another, “That’s 100% him,” as quoted by NBC News.
Officers then questioned him and requested identification.

Mangione Initially Gives a Different Name
Mangione initially told officers his name was Mark Rosario and handed them a New Jersey ID bearing that name.Officers told him he was under investigation and warned that giving another false name could result in an arrest on a false-identity charge.
He then gave officers his real name and spelled it out. Officers read him his Miranda rights, then shortly afterward handcuffed and searched him.
Police Search His Belongings
The footage continues after Mangione was taken to the police station.Officers searched his belongings, including his backpack. They recovered a 9mm handgun, a silencer and another ammunition magazine. Police also found a journal containing handwritten notes.
A judge ultimately ruled that most of the evidence obtained during the search could be used in the case.
The Arrest Came Five Days After Thompson Was Killed
Mangione was arrested on Dec. 9, 2024, five days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan.Thompson, 50, was heading to UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference when he was killed.
Mangione's arrest took place at the Altoona McDonald's.
What the Newly Released Footage Shows
The recordings document the encounter from the initial questioning inside the restaurant through Mangione's arrest and the search that followed at the police station.They show officers asking Mangione to lower his mask, questioning the name on his identification, obtaining his real name and eventually placing him in handcuffs.
Parts of the footage had previously been shown during a court hearing. The larger collection was later unsealed and released publicly, making the recordings available outside the courtroom.
