Nury Martinez, president of the Los Angeles City Council, has apologized for reportedly making racist statements about a colleague member of the council and his black child.

Martinez stated in a statement that she allowed the circumstances to get the best of her in a time of tremendous irritation and fury, and she held herself responsible for her statements. She apologises for this.

The words were part of leaked audio obtained by The Los Angeles Times after it was shared anonymously on Reddit. The recording depicts a conversation between Martinez, Council members Kevin de León, Gil Cedillo, and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, according to the newspaper.

According to the sources, most of the discussion centered on designs suggested by the city's redistricting panel and council members' dissatisfaction with them, as well as the need to guarantee that largely Latino districts would not lose economic assets in the once-in-a-decade process.
