Lopez vs Apple $95 million settlement: Siri users begin receiving payments — here’s what to know
People across the United States are getting money deposits with names like “Lopez v. Apple” or “Lopez Voice Assistant” in their bank or payment apps. These deposits are part of a class action settlement linked to claims that Apple’s Siri recorded private talks without permission. Many users say the payment proves their approved claim has finally turned into real cash.

Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle the case but said it did nothing wrong. The legal notice confirmed that payments started on Friday, January 23, as reported b by The Mac Observer. Money is being sent by direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal, or paper check, depending on what users chose while filing claims. The case is called Lopez v. Apple Inc. and was filed in a California federal court in 2021.

Siri privacy claims

The lawsuit claimed Siri sometimes turned on by mistake and recorded private conversations. These accidental activations allegedly happened when users pressed a button or when Siri heard words similar to “Hey, Siri.” The lawsuit said Apple collected private or confidential talks during these activations. It also claimed this data was shared with third-party advertisers. Some users said they later saw ads related to things they had only spoken about out loud. Others said Siri listened even when they never tried to turn it on.

The complaint referred to a 2019 report that said Apple contractors sometimes heard sensitive audio clips. At that time, Apple said only a small amount of data was reviewed to improve Siri and dictation. Under the settlement, Apple set aside $95 million for payments to users, as noted by The Mac Observer. Each eligible device could earn up to $20. Each person could claim payments for up to five devices.

Who gets the money

This made the maximum possible payout $100 per person. Actual payouts depend on how many people filed valid claims. Reports from users show the average payment per device is about $8. Because of this, some people received close to $40 for five devices. Anyone who owned a Siri-enabled device during the set time period could qualify.

Users had to experience an unintended Siri activation during a private conversation to be eligible. The covered time period ran from September 17, 2014, to December 31, 2024, as cited by The Mac Observer. Eligible devices included iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, and iPod touch. The deadline to file a claim was July 2, 2025. Anyone who missed the deadline will not receive any payment, even if their device was affected.
