Locarno Film Festival Controversy: Iranian filmmaker Ali Ahmadzadeh faces pressure, travel ban
Iranian filmmaker Ali Ahmadzadeh is facing huge pressure from authorities to withdraw his film "Critical Zone" from Locarno Film Festival, as per reports. His visa has been blocked, and he's banned from leaving the country, the reports said.

After the announcement of Locarno's competition features on July 5, Ahmadzadeh was summoned to the Ministry of Security. Along with him, the film's international sales agent Luxbox Paris and producer Sina Ataeian Dena have also received threatening emails and messages, demanding the removal of the film from the festival.
In a statement, Dena said that Ahmadzadeh endures frequent interrogations and harassment through text messages. His visa has been blocked, and he is prohibited from leaving the country, the producer added.
Dena further said, “Ali is under constant psychological torture, and we believe that making all these public might create a bit of protection for him. According to what we predicted and agreed on a long time ago we will anyway premiere the film. Standing all kinds of threats and falls accusations became a part of our job, and showing the film is the most important part of our fight.”
Locarno artistic director Giona Nazzaro said, “The Locarno Film Festival has always stood by freedom of artistic expression and thought. A place where cinema art is celebrated in all its manifestations, with respect for individual beliefs. We call for the release of Ali Ahmadzadeh and the respect of his physical and mental integrity and dignity as a human being and artist.”
