Lionel Messi is set to sign a multi-year contract extension with Inter Miami, securing his future in Major League Soccer (MLS) beyond the current deal, reported ESPN. Since joining in 2023, Messi, whose current contract runs through the end of the 2025 season, has transformed the club’s fortunes on and off the pitch.

According to the report, negotiations are in their final stages, with only minor details left to settle. The financial terms have not been disclosed. After Messi and Inter Miami reach an agreement, the contract will be forwarded to Major League Soccer for final approval.

Messi ranks second this season in MLS with 20 goals in 21 matches and is tied for sixth with 11 assists. Last year, he recorded 20 goals (tied for second) and 16 assists (tied for third). In 46 league appearances for Inter Miami, he has tallied 41 goals and 27 assists, while across all competitions he boasts 54 goals in 62 games.

Messi, An eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, enjoyed a glittering career with Barcelona from 2004–21 and Paris Saint-Germain from 2021-23, winning 10 league titles in Spain, two in France, and four UEFA Champions League trophies with Barcelona.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas earlier told ESPN that the club would go to any length to make Messi comfortable with signing an extension and ultimately retiring in South Florida.

Since arriving in MLS, Messi has already lifted the 2023 Leagues Cup and guided Miami to the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, though the team exited in the first playoff round. Inter Miami (14-6-7, 49 points) currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference ahead of Saturday’s home clash with DC United.
