Lionel Messi delivered a fairytale performance Thursday in his emotional home farewell for Argentina, scoring twice in 3-0 win over Venezuela, to delight a packed Estadio Monumental crowd in Buenos Aires. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner showcased his trademark brilliance, reminding fans why he remains the heart of the world champions. After the match, Messi also addressed speculation about his international future, revealing that he is keeping the door open for the 2026 World Cup, in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, provided he remains fit. While acknowledging the physical demands of tournament football, the 38-year-old said he would evaluate his form and fitness closer to the event.

Messi has yet to reveal when he plans to retire from top-level football, though the qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup will not begin until 2027, when he will be 40 years old. In his farewell match, the Argentina captain struck in the 39th and 80th minutes, with Lautaro Martínez adding another in the 76th. Messi now boasts 36 goals in South American World Cup qualifying - extending his record as the competition’s all-time leading scorer - ahead of his Inter Miami teammate Luis Suárez, who sits second with 29 goals but has retired from Uruguay duty, while Bolivia’s Marcelo Moreno Martins ranks third with 22.

"Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of," Messi said. "I’ve experienced a lot of things on this pitch, both good and not so good, but it’s always a joy to play in Argentina, in front of our fans."

Messi has made it clear that he will only take part in next year’s World Cup if he feels physically fit to compete at the highest level.

"I’m excited, eager. It’s day by day, feeling the sensations. If I feel good, I enjoy it; if not, I’d rather not be there," he said, adding that the nine months until the tournament kicks off 'is a long time'.

Already assured of their place at the next year's tournament, the reigning world champions pushed their tally to 38 points and will stay atop the South American qualifying table regardless of next Tuesday’s final-round results. Venezuela, still chasing a maiden World Cup appearance, sits seventh with 18 points and remains in contention for an intercontinental playoff spot.
