Liam Payne left behind $32.3 million fortune without a will – Here’s how it will be distributed now

Former One Direction star Liam Payne, who died last year in Argentina's Buenos Aires, left behind a £24.3 million (or $32.3 million) fortune, which includes property and money, without any will, as per official records.

In October last year, several of One Direction fans were left stunned after it came out that the 31-year-old star had died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a Buenos Aires-based hotel's balcony.

Who owns Liam Payne's wealth now?

Payne's former partner, Cheryl Tweedy, an ex-member of the Girls Aloud pop group, holds the legal responsibility over the money, properties as well as possessions of Payne, The Guardian reported.


Liam and Cheryl were in a relationship for more than two years and shared a son, named Bear, who has now turned 8. However, the two stars did not get married.

The court documents have revealed that Cheryl now serves as the administrator for the late singer's estate. However, she is not the only person as Richard Mark Bray, a music industry lawyer, has also been given the administrator duties.

While they will manage the wealth, the two of them -- Cheryl and Richard -- hold limited authority over it and are not allowed to distribute it.

According to the BBC, in cases where a person dies and does not leave behind any will, the rules allow his or her children to inherit their estate. This is applicable when there is no living partner -- husband or wife.

Based on the letters of administration, the gross value of the late singer's property stands at £28,594,888 (roughly $3,81,35,000). The net value of the estate comes down to £24,279,728 (about $3,23,80,173), which is the total amount after paying all the debts and expenses.

Both Cheryl and the lawyer have limited grant of representation over Liam Payne's wealth. This means that they can preserve the estate of the deceased person till the time the general grant is available.

What happened with Liam Payne?

Payne breathed his last after he fell down from the hotel balcony in October 2024. At the time of his death, the singer was found to have cocaine, alcohol as well as a prescription antidepressant in his system, The New York Times quoted a toxicology report as stating.

In the postmortem report, it was revealed that the 31-year-old died of multiple traumas, while he had also suffered “internal and external haemorrhage”.

In February 2025, an Argentina-based court had dropped charges of criminal negligence against three people.

On the other side, two individuals, which include a waiter and an employee of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, continue to face charges and are accused of supplying narcotics to the singer.
