Lewis Hamilton reportedly crashes during private Ferrari F1 test in Barcelona, escapes unhurt

Lewis Hamilton’s modified Ferrari SF-23 reportedly collided with a barrier during the private F1 test. Hamilton was unharmed in the crash and was able to exit the car without any injury.

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton is reported to have crashed on Day 2 (January 29) of his three-day private F1 test with his new Ferrari team. The Formula 1 icon is said to have emerged unscathed from the incident.

Car hit a barrier

The incident is said to have occurred when Lewis Hamilton was navigating the third sector of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during a lap.

According to a report in Autosport, the modified version of Ferrari’s 2023 challenger, the SF-23, collided with a barrier. Following the crash, Hamilton reportedly climbed out of the car without any injury, and the vehicle was quickly returned to the pits for inspection.

Ferrari is currently investigating the cause of the incident to determine what went wrong.

Suspension and bodywork damage in crash

The suspension and aerodynamic bodywork components of the car were damaged in the crash. According to the report, the incident occurred just ahead of the planned driver change, during which Hamilton’s teammate, Charles Leclerc, was set to take over the wheel.

The ongoing Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session, in which the crash took place, provides Hamilton with an opportunity to adjust to his new Ferrari cockpit.

Ferrari’s TPC team will now need to replace the seat, steering wheel, and other personalised cockpit parts for Leclerc’s session, which has been delayed as a result of Hamilton’s crash.

TPC session set to end on Thursday

On Tuesday (Day 1), Leclerc drove for the first half of the day. The private testing session is scheduled to end on Thursday. Last week, both Hamilton and Leclerc tested at Ferrari’s home track in Fiorano.
