Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight announced at Gamescom; open-world Gotham coming in 2026

Batman is returning to consoles, this time in Lego form, with Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Warner Bros. Games and TT Games officially unveiled the title on Tuesday(August 19) at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, confirming a 2026 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2.

The new game is the first dedicated Lego Batman console release in over a decade and represents TT Games’ most ambitious superhero project to date. Unlike earlier Lego Batman entries, Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a fully open-world Gotham, where players can glide across skyscrapers, grapple through alleys, and drive different versions of the Batmobile.

A Gotham built from every era

The game spans multiple interpretations of Batman across comics, films, and games. Gameplay shown during the reveal featured Batman battling Penguin in a chase sequence inspired by Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, as well as a Lego parody of Bane’s iconic “darkness” speech from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Warner Bros. described the project as “a love letter to Batman,” weaving together decades of mythology. Jim Lee, President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer of DC, said in a statement: “Whether he’s the wrathful Dark Knight, the brilliant detective, or the unlikely father of the Bat-Fam, Batman has constantly evolved, shaped by the world around him while remaining a timeless symbol. This game brings together nearly every facet of his legacy, letting you experience the full range of what makes Batman iconic.”

Combat inspired by Arkham, cast led by Matt Berry

Unlike traditional Lego titles known for slapstick combat, Legacy of the Dark Knight draws heavily from Rocksteady’s Arkham series. The demo featured Batman chaining together combo attacks, performing stealth takedowns, and using gadgets mid-fight.

The cast includes longtime allies Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, Nightwing, and Commissioner Jim Gordon. Villains confirmed so far include Joker, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Penguin, and Bane, the latter voiced by British actor and comedian Matt Berry, known for What We Do in the Shadows.

Difficulty modes and unlockables

In a first for the Lego franchise, TT Games has added multiple difficulty tiers, allowing players to choose between lighter family-friendly settings and a more punishing “Dark Knight Mode.” Players connecting a WB Games account can unlock bonus outfits, including the Golden Age Batsuit.

A new era for TT games

Between 2005 and 2022, TT Games produced more than 20 Lego titles, including the blockbuster Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. But the studio has been quieter in recent years, as Warner Bros. experimented with other developers and Lego itself partnered with Fortnite.

Legacy of the Dark Knight marks TT Games’ return to form with its largest open-world Lego environment to date. The project also signals a new phase for the Lego gaming brand, leaning less on slapstick humor and more on cinematic storytelling, while retaining the accessibility that made the series popular with younger audiences.

The game is scheduled to release worldwide in 2026.
