Sir Michael Parkinson was one of the most cherished and celebrated broadcasters in Britain. He was known for hosting his talk show "Parkinson" from 1971 to 2007.

Parkinson's career in TV spanned over seven decades. In his long-running professional career, he interviewed the world's biggest celebrities of the 20th century.

Michael Parkinson was born in Yorkshire in Northern England. He always wanted to be a professional cricketer. After leaving school at the age of 16, he joined local newspaper journalism near his hometown Barnsley. He became a feature writer at The Manchester Guardian and Daily Express, London.


He started working on his own talk show "Parkinson" as part-time work given by BBC in 1971 till 1982 until renewed again from 1998 to 2007. He was a brilliant host who was not only good at taking interviews but was also good at to listening the stories of his chat show guests.

Parkinson had interviewed around 2000 celebrities in his career. He interviewed US Jazz singer Marion Montgomery as his first guest. He had hosted various other shows like Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Radio Five Live, and Radio Sunday Supplement.

Parkinson had received several accolades during his lifetime and also became the First Chancellor of Nottingham Trent University.

Parkinson died at his home last night at the age of 88 following a brief illness. His family confirmed the news and has requested private time to grieve.

He is survived by his wife Mary and three Children.

In a tribute, BBC director general Tim Davie described Parkinson as, "Truly one of a kind, an incredible broadcaster and journalist who will be hugely missed".

Broadcaster and author Gyles Brandreth said, " Michael's chat shows were truly engaging and brought out the best in his guests".
