In a video shared on social media, James is seen sitting in a gym, echoing the setting of his infamous 2010 broadcast. The caption reads: "The decision of all decisions. October 7th. 12 pm EST." This has led fans and analysts to wonder if the announcement pertains to his retirement, especially as he enters his 23rd NBA season at age 40.
According to People, despite the speculation, James has previously indicated that he hasn't set a specific timetable for his retirement. During the Lakers' media day on September 29, he stated, "I'm not waiting on Bryce," referring to his younger son, Bryce James, who is currently a freshman at the University of Arizona. He emphasized that his retirement decision would be based on his own timeline, not influenced by family considerations.
James' longevity in the league is remarkable. He is set to become the first player in NBA history to compete in 23 seasons, having exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season. His performance remains elite, with averages of 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game last season.
