On the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the show delved into the Hamas-Israel conflict, a topic briefly touched upon in previous weeks. John Oliver immediately tackled this sensitive subject in the main segment of the episode.

Following TMZ, Justin Bieber, and various morning shows expressing their perspectives on the war, the program argued that the matter goes beyond simply choosing a side and adhering to it. Oliver opted not to delve into the extensive history of animosity between Gazans and Israelis, humorously noting that he isn't a school. Instead, he highlighted the misleading nature of the conflict's media coverage. Emphasizing the crucial point that neither the Palestinian nor Israeli populations endorse this war, the show focused on how their voices have been consistently overlooked.

To kick things off, on the recent episode of Last Week Tonight, the show delved into the statements made by American newscasters regarding Gazans supporting Hamas because they elected the group into office. While this statement holds some truth, it overlooks a crucial detail: Hamas assumed their government position nearly two decades ago, and at that time, they presented a considerably moderate stance. A representative assured the population that Hamas was "moderated," "open-minded," and "not an extremist organization." However, their position has evolved significantly over the years, leading to a shift in Palestinian sentiment. Presently, Palestinians generally do not support terrorist attacks and are not in favor of Hamas.

Similarly, in Israel, a significant majority, exceeding 70% of the population, desires the removal of the present Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. This sentiment arises from the belief that Netanyahu's approach during the conflict has resulted in casualties among both Palestinians and Israelis. Prior to the outbreak of the recent war, Israel experienced approximately 40 weeks of protests against Netanyahu. Despite these protests, he secured his re-election in 2022 by forging a coalition with far-right politicians, including Itamar Ben-Gvir. Last Week Tonight highlighted Ben-Gvir's convictions for supporting terrorist organizations and inciting racism.

Last Week Tonight highlighted that incidents such as Israel unleashing over 6,000 bombs on the Gaza Strip in a span of six days are facilitated by substantial funding from the United States. With an annual military aid of approximately 3.8 billion dollars, the U.S. enables actions that are tantamount to Palestinian genocide.
