The last Solar Eclipse of the calendar year is taking place today. The celestial phenomenon occurs when moon passes between the earth and the sun, it blocks most of the sun's light and throw its shadow on our globe, creating a dazzling, fiery crescent in the sky. This is happening for the second time this year, It will last roughly for four hours, beginning at 5 a.m. ET and lasting into the early afternoon for those in the Eastern hemisphere. As the moon, sun, and Earth will not be exactly aligned, the eclipse will be partial, as evidenced by the crescent shape of the sun's light peeking out from under the moon.

During the eclipse, the moon will be approximately four days from its rotation , its closest point to Earth in its 27-day cycle, and will thus seem slightly bigger than usual.

Why can't we just place a space station on the moon?

It sounds interesting and useful. It could be a nice stop to rest on the way from Earth to further into the solar system. But there are good reasons we don't yet have a space station on the moon.

One reason is, we don't send people to the moon very often. Humans have been to the moon just six times - and all between 1969-72. Even those powerful rockets which took them were not made after that. Such rockets are, however, in the works again.

There is also the tyranny of distance. A space station cannot be launched as a whole . It has to be put together at location, the way the International Space station was. But while the ISS is 400 kms up, the moon is 484,000 kms away.

People on a space station require regular supplies of food and power. Sending stuff to the moon , which is three days away, is not as viable an option as sending it to the ISS.

Of course, different solutions are being worked on . Like building a station with lumar materials. Growing plants on water for food. Placing the space station at the poles and using solar panels. When will all this come together? Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Even when the moon is mostly covering the sun, it is not safe to stare at its rays without protective eyewear. According to the American Astronomical Society, it is critical to use eye protection that fulfills international standards to be deemed good eclipse glasses.

According to Kirk, the solar eclipse happens the time the moon, sun, and earth coincide, when the moon is in a new moon phase; within two weeks, the sun, Earth, and the full moon will align, with the Earth and moon changing positions in their orbits, resulting in a lunar eclipse.
