Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump, is seriously thinking about running for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina, a source told NOTUS. Another source close to the Trump family told NBC News there is a “high” chance Lara will run for the Senate seat.

This news came right after Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, announced he will not try to get re-elected next year, leaving the seat open. Tillis, who is 64 years old, had public fights with President Trump, especially about a plan called the “big, beautiful bill” and cuts to Medicaid, according to Daily Beast.

Lara’s political work and experience

Lara Trump is 42 years old and has been very active in politics within the Trump family. In March 2024, President Trump removed the old Republican National Committee (RNC) leaders and made Lara a co-chair of the RNC. This put her in charge of raising money and planning the Milwaukee convention, as per reports.

After President Trump won his election, Lara started working at Fox News and now hosts a weekend show there. Lara was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and has often thought about running for office in her home state, as stated by Daily Beast.

Other candidates and poll results

Although President Trump has won North Carolina three times, it is not a very strong Republican state. Lara is not the only Republican thinking about running for Tillis’ seat. Others include Representative Richard Hudson, who leads the National Republican Congressional Committee, and RNC Chair Michael Whatley, as per report.

Some polls already show Lara as a strong candidate. The Carolina Journal reported that a Victory Insights poll last summer found Lara had 65% support from likely Republican voters in North Carolina. In that same poll, Thom Tillis only had 11% support, even though Lara currently lives in Jupiter, Florida, as per the report by Daily Beast.
