HBO has officially taken up "Lanterns," a live-action series for DC Studios. The series, based on the "Green Lantern" comics, will have eight episodes.

HBO has confirmed the production of "Lanterns," the first live-action series for DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran. The series has an eight-episode order. Chris Mundy, known for "True Detective: Night Country" and "Ozark," will be the showrunner and executive producer.

Damon Lindelof and Tom King are also on board as executive producers. They will co-write the series with Mundy. Warner Bros. TV, DC Studios, and HBO are producing the show. The series is based on the "Green Lantern" comics.

Plot and Characters

The series will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They are members of the Green Lantern Corps. This intergalactic team defends specific realms of the cosmos using rings that grant superhuman powers. The plot involves new recruit Stewart and veteran Jordan investigating a murder in the American heartland.

In the comics, Jordan is a test pilot. He was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 "Green Lantern" movie. Stewart, a military veteran, is one of DC’s first Black superheroes.

HBO Originals

Initially, "Lanterns" was set to be a Max Original. However, under a new plan, major projects like "Lanterns" will fall under the HBO Originals brand.

Announcement

James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the "Green Lantern" series in January 2023. They presented their first slate of titles for film and TV. Safran described the project as a significant HBO-quality event similar to "True Detective." This series replaces a previous "Green Lantern" series that was in development with Berlanti Productions.
