Lance Mackey died at 52. Mackey's father announced on Facebook that his son had died of cancer. Mackey, in 2001, was diagnosed with throat cancer but beat it after having surgery and radiation therapy. But later he declared that he had cancer again in August 2021.

Lance personified the spirit of the race, the fortitude of an Alaskan musher, demonstrated the ultimate demonstration of resilience and was loved by his followers, according to Iditarod officials. From 2007 through 2010, Mackey had won the Iditarod four years in a row.

According to reports, the legendary race was imbibed in him as his father, Dick Mackey, won it in 1978, and his brother, Rick Mackey, won it in 1983. Officials from the Iditarod also paid respect to Mackey in an Instagram post that included a photo montage of the musher.

Iditarod Nation mourned the death of Lance Mackey, a four-time Iditarod champion. Lance died late on the evening of September 7, 2022, following a 20-year fight with cancer. Mackey is the only musher who has won both the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in the same year.

Mackey's career was eventually cut short due to personal concerns, health crises, and drug issues. According to the news agency, he was later diagnosed with Raynaud's syndrome, which causes limited circulation to the hands and feet.
