LA County Sheriff’s Department posts condolence message after US bombs Iran
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) found itself embroiled in controversy after posting, editing, then deleting, a social media message expressing condolences for victims of the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The post, published on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, sparked widespread criticism and accusations of overstepping by commenting on a sensitive foreign military operation.

The original message read: “Our hearts go out to the victims and families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran. While this tragic event happened overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state and federal partners.” It also reassured residents there were no known threats to Los Angeles County but mentioned increased patrols at places of worship and other sensitive locations “out of an abundance of caution.”

The post quickly went viral, drawing sharp backlash from social media users and commentators who questioned the appropriateness of a local law enforcement agency expressing sympathy for victims of a U.S. military operation. Some accused LASD of undermining national policy and intervening into geopolitical matters beyond its jurisdiction.

Facing mounting criticism, LASD amended the post by removing references to the U.S. strikes and condolences before deleting it entirely. The department then issued a formal apology, stating:

“We are issuing this statement to formally apologize for an offensive and inappropriate social media post recently posted on our Department social media platforms regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran. This post was unacceptable, made in error, and does not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the Department.”

The apology emphasized that LASD’s mission is “solely focused on protecting public safety and serving our diverse communities” and that the department does not comment on foreign policy or military matters. An internal review was launched to determine how the post was created and published, with promises to strengthen social media oversight to prevent future incidents.

The controversial post came shortly after the U.S. military launched “Operation Midnight Hammer,” a precision strike targeting three of Iran’s key nuclear facilities—Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. Pentagon officials described the operation as a success that degraded Tehran’s nuclear capabilities while maintaining the element of surprise.
