One of the most prominent Russian opposition activists, Ilya Yashin, was recently given an eight-and-a-half-year prison term for spreading "fake news" about the military. When the Russian invasion of Ukraine occurred, Ilya Yashin was one of the few opponents of the Kremlin who stayed in Russia and continued to oppose the conflict, according to reports.

Ilya Yashin was arrested in the Ukrainian town of Bucha after he made public accusations of war crimes committed by the Russian government. Shortly after the invasion, Russia passed a law making it illegal to spread "false information". Many Russians have been sentenced to prison since then, but Yashin's is the longest.

Despite his protests, Judge Oksana Goryunova found that he had deliberately disseminated misinformation about the Russian military. On his YouTube channel in April of last year, he discussed the massacre of hundreds of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha, outside of Kyiv.

He said he gave the judge the official Russian and Ukrainian versions of the story. During the video, he showed images and accounts from the scene, some of which came from the BBC.

In an interview with BBC Russian conducted in July, Yashin explained that his detention had not come as a surprise because Russian authorities have made it clear that Kremlin opponents have only two options: exile or incarceration.

While in prison, he was asked if he could oppose the Russian leader. He responded that the opposition needed fighters. On Friday, Yashin's supporters protested the prison sentence, calling it unjust and threatening their right to free speech.
