Why was Kodak Black arrested?
South Florida rapper Kodak Black was arrested earlier this week in Orange County, Florida, according to court documents referenced by CBS News Miami and Rolling Stone. Authorities accused the rapper of trafficking MDMA in an amount greater than 10 grams but less than 200 grams. Court records show the charge was filed as a felony. Kapri is currently being held without bond while awaiting a court hearing.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reportedly handled the arrest, while inmate records listed the rapper as being booked on Wednesday. His case is expected to move through circuit court proceedings, as per a report by CBS News and Rolling Stone.
The arrest quickly drew national attention because of both the severity of the charge and Kodak Black’s long public history with legal issues.

What did his attorney say about the case?
Kapri’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, told Rolling Stone that the arrest was actually a “coordinated surrender” connected to a November 2025 investigation involving a vehicle search. According to Cohen, police allegedly found “a bag containing several items, including a bottle of prescription cough syrup,” inside the vehicle. The attorney said Kapri was not inside the car at the time authorities searched it, according to court records cited by CBS News Miami and Rolling Stone.
Cohen further claimed the bottle “allegedly had Mr. Kapri’s fingerprint on it.” The attorney strongly criticized prosecutors for escalating the case into a trafficking charge instead of a simpler possession allegation.
“Instead of simple possession, they doubled down and filed it as a trafficking charge,” Cohen said. “I will be fighting the charge."
He also argued that the case reflects what he described as a recurring pattern involving his client. “This is an ongoing theme where cases that would normally not be filed due to a weak legal basis are filed against Mr. Kapri,” Cohen added. “We look forward to yet another fruitful resolution to another case that should have never been filed.”
How does this connect to his past legal troubles?
The latest arrest adds to a lengthy legal history surrounding Kodak Black. Over the years, the rapper has faced multiple criminal charges. He was previously convicted federally on two counts involving false statements on government forms. He also faced state-level convictions connected to first-degree assault and battery charges.
His federal conviction resulted in a 46-month prison sentence, though that sentence was later commuted after he served roughly 10 months. He was also ordered to complete probation related to the state charges, as per a report by Rolling Stone.
Despite his repeated legal troubles, Kapri has continued releasing music and maintaining a loyal fanbase. His most recent album, Just Getting Started, was released in late 2025 and reached No. 77 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The arrest also comes less than a year after the City of Pompano Beach honored him with a key to the city. Local leaders praised his charitable work, saying he had helped families during extreme Florida heat by donating air conditioning units, distributing holiday turkeys and providing bicycles and Christmas gifts to children in the community, as per a report by CBS News and Rolling Stone.
The rapper remains behind bars as the case moves forward in Florida court.
