Knuckle Girl: Amazon Original to create live-action, female-led film on webtoon

Popular South Korean action webtoon – Knuckle Girl – will soon be adapted as an original movie by Amazon’s Prime Video. It will be a Korea-Japan co-venture, with a Japanese female actor in the lead.

What is Knuckle Girl about?


Knuckle Girl is about a woman boxer named Ran, who takes on school bullies and takes part in illegal boxing bouts.

Ran faces a big challenge when her sister is kidnapped by a criminal gang, and she must save her. Ran will have to break into the underworld for this, but wearing brass knuckledusters instead of boxing gloves.

Knuckle Girl is directed by Chang, the South Korean director whose film The Target was at the Cannes Film Festival Midnight screening section.

Knuckle Girl has been written by Yoo Gap-yeol, whose project Emergency Declaration was at Cannes. Knuckle Girl is co-written by Jeong Byeong-sik of The Villain fame.

Who stars in the lead in Knuckle Girl?

As mentioned, the film adaptation of Knuckle Girl stars Japanese female actor Miyoshi Iyaka, of the film Confession fame. She can also be seen in two seasons of Japanese dystopian thriller Alice in Borderland on Netflix. Iyaka underwent action training for the role.

Chang said that Knuckle Girl is a "global project involving a writer, Japanese actors, and a global OTT, and the thrilling story, sensuous directing, and passionate performances of the actors will allow you to experience a wealth of fun that is different from webtoons."

The Knuckle Girl too was created by Jeong Sang Young in 2014 on KakaoPage, a webtoon platform owned by Korean giant Kakao Entertainment.
