Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress celebrated for her roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather trilogy, and Something’s Gotta Give, died at age 79. Beyond her enduring influence as a performer and style icon, Keaton often spoke candidly about her experiences behind the camera, including her one career regret, a film she felt she didn’t quite pull off as a director.

In a 2015 interview with The Independent, Keaton reflected on her second directorial effort, Hanging Up (2000), describing it as a “failure” compared with her debut, Unstrung Heroes (1995).

“I didn’t pull it off,” she said at the time. “I would like to try again, though. I would like to try, but I think I’d have to find the right smaller movie for me… when you have a failure, which Hanging Up was, people aren’t going, ‘Gee, can you please direct my movie?’”

Keaton’s honesty about her work behind the camera revealed a side of her rarely seen by fans, one of ambition, vulnerability, and persistence. While her acting career earned her an Academy Award and worldwide acclaim, her directing endeavors were more private, yet equally important to her creative identity.

Beyond acting and directing, Keaton was renowned for her unique fashion sense, her interior design expertise, and her influence in photography and home design. She had previously survived health challenges, including basal cell carcinoma at age 21 and two surgeries for squamous cell carcinoma, as reported in a 2015 Los Angeles Times article.

Tributes poured in across the entertainment industry, remembering her not only as a gifted actress but also as a fearless, genuine voice in film and life.
