Martin Scorsese is set to receive an honorary Golden Bear at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, scheduled from February 15 to 25, 2024. The award acknowledging his lifetime achievement will be presented during a special ceremony on February 20.

Berlinale managing director Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian expressed that, Martin Scorsese serves as an unparalleled role model for those who perceive cinema as the art of shaping a story in a manner that is both entirely personal and universal.

They further stated that Scorsese's perspective on history and mankind had assisted them in understanding and questioning their identity and origins.

Regarding his latest film, "Killers of the Flower Moon," they conveyed Scorsese's own eloquent description, saying it is an "offering that acknowledges the extent of the terror the Osage community experienced, and one that might also give some kind of solace."

Several of Scorsese's films have been featured at the Berlinale. It started with "Raging Bull," shown Out of Competition in 1981, followed by "Cape Fear" in Competition in 1992. "Gangs of New York" played Out of Competition in 2003 and returned for a retrospective screening in 2010.

In 2008, his Rolling Stones concert film, "Shine a Light," opened the Berlinale, and "Shutter Island" played Out of Competition in 2010.

Besides, Scorsese presented his documentary on the 'New York Review of Books' as a work in progress in 2014. It later premiered as "The 50 Year Argument" on HBO.
