Kevin McCarthy looks to work on crucial deal to gain votes to get elected as speaker
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to get enough votes to be the chosen speaker. He is working on a serious last-minute deal to secure speakership.

The offer given by McCarthy would lower the way that is required for a motion to vacate the chair. Recently, due to the rule changes proposed by Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, only a single member of the leadership House will be able to offer a motion to vacate. Hence, McCarthy is trying to gain votes at the last moment.
The Conservative Republicans are approaching for this rule to be reversed, by allowing only a single member to grant the vote to the speaker at any time. An Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, who is running against McCarthy for speakership said that members must be able to hold their own leadership accountable.
While hardline Republicans are seeing it as an insurance policy for allowing members to offer a motion to vacate the chair, many fear that McCarthy will not agree to make concessions on the policy.
The incoming House GOP majority is only 222 seats, while McCarthy cannot afford to ignore the demands. Mostly, 218 votes are required to get the speakership of the House on January 3 presuming that everyone remains present and grants their vote.
