Kentucky primary election results, winners: ‌Thomas Massie lost to Donald Trump backed Ed ​Gallrein, S. Guthrie, James Comer, Melissa Strange win key races

Kentucky primary election results are out. Ed ​Gallrein, boosted ​by the backing of ​U.S. President Donald Trump, ousted incumbent Rep. ‌Thomas Massie, ⁠a ⁠prominent Trump critic, ​on Tuesday to become the Republican ​Party's nominee to represent Kentucky's 4th congressional ​district ⁠in the ‌U.S. House ​of ​Representatives, NBC News ⁠projected. S. Guthrie has won Republican nomination for U.S. House in Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District. James Comer won Republican nomination for U.S. House in Kentucky's 1st Congressional District. Melissa Strange won Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District.





Kentucky U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie lost his Republican House primary Tuesday after a concerted effort by President Donald Trump to oust him from Congress through challenger and ultimate winner Ed Gallrein. The result showed the president’s persisting influence over GOP voters, adding to a growing number of Trump-backed primary challengers to defeat Republican lawmakers who angered him in his second term.




Tuesday's primary vote was seen ​as a test ​of Trump's powers to persuade Republican voters to punish his critics. ‌Massie has represented parts of northen ​Kentucky ​in ⁠the House since 2012, and has been an outspoken ​critic of Trump during the president's second term.




Massie, who has served in Congress since 2012, angered Trump by pushing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, criticizing the war in Iran and voting against his signature tax legislation last year.




The congressman tried to convince voters that they could be both for him and for Trump.




Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, ran on his military service and loyalty to the president. He accused Massie of forsaking Trump and the party. Gallrein is expected to win the general election in the deeply red district.
