Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announces state of emergency ahead of winter storm and arctic blast

A state of emergency has been announced by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear ahead of an arctic front that is projected to bring severely low temperatures to the United States and Kentucky.

Agencies
On Wednesday, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency as Kentucky prepares for an arctic blast predicted to arrive on Thursday night. Friday's forecast forecasts for snow, falling temperatures, and winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour. On Friday and Saturday, wind chills are forecast to range between 10 and 25 degrees below zero. The temperature is not predicted to rise until Monday or Tuesday.

On Thursday, rainfall is expected to start before soon changing to snow as the temperature drops. The amount of snowfall varies, according to Beshear, but he emphasizes being ready in the days before Christmas.

Beshear said that declaring a state of emergency enables the state to have the necessary, accessible, and prepared resources. The Kentucky National Guard and Kentucky Emergency Operations Center are prepared, and the Guard prepositioned resources to aid rescue efforts.

Beshear also informed that the weather in the state's western section, including Paducah and Hopkinsville, would begin to shift about 5 p.m. (eastern). The system will reach into the state's central region, encompassing Louisville and Lexington, by 7 p.m.

  1. What should one wear during an arctic blast?
Wear many layers of warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothes rather than a single layer of heavy clothing to combat the extreme cold. Ensure that your outer layer is windproof and tightly knit. Cover any exposed skin and keep an eye out for frostbite (freezing of the skin and underlying tissues).
  2. How does one get ready for an arctic blast?
    • Know the location of your warming centre.• Have fuel in the tank.• Have a backup source of heat.
