KY primary election 2026 results
Donald Trump finally got the political victory he had been chasing against Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie.
After months of tension and public attacks, Trump-backed Republican Ed Gallrein defeated Massie in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District primary, according to NBC News projections. The race became one of the most closely watched Republican battles of the year and turned into the most expensive intraparty House primary fight on record.
Massie, first elected in 2012, had built a reputation as a libertarian-minded conservative willing to challenge Republican leadership and even Trump himself. But this time, Trump’s political machine proved too powerful to overcome.

Why did Donald Trump turn against Thomas Massie?
The relationship between Trump and Massie had been tense for years, but the conflict intensified over several major issues.
Thomas Massie opposed Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” spending package and pushed efforts to limit presidential war powers regarding Iran. He also joined Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna in advocating for the release of Justice Department files connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
Those moves angered Trump and many of his allies. Trump publicly labeled Massie a “third rate Grandstander” and began searching for what reports described as a “warm body” to challenge him in the Republican primary, as per a report by Politico.
That challenger became Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, fifth-generation farmer and former state Senate candidate. Trump endorsed Gallrein even before he officially entered the race and later campaigned alongside him during a March rally in Kentucky.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also appeared with Gallrein shortly before the election, a move NBC News described as unusual for a sitting defense secretary.

How expensive did the Kentucky race become?
The contest quickly exploded into one of the most expensive Republican primaries in recent memory. According to AdImpact, more than $33 million was spent on advertising during the race. Roughly $19 million of that total went toward ads supporting Gallrein or attacking Massie.
Much of the outside spending came from MAGA KY, a super PAC connected to Trump adviser Chris LaCivita. Pro-Israel groups linked to the Republican Jewish Coalition and AIPAC also spent millions backing Gallrein, as per a report by Politico.
Massie fought back with his own advertising campaign, including a spot titled “Tucked Tail And Ran,” which criticized Gallrein over his past separation from the Republican Party during Trump’s first term.
Still, Trump’s endorsement unified several Republican factions that had long wanted to remove Massie from office.

What does the result mean for Republicans?
Thomas Massie warned before the election that the race could determine whether Republicans in Congress would continue standing up to Trump.
“There’s a portion of the electorate who doesn’t believe that Congress should be independent,” Massie said in an interview last month. “They believe that, when the Republicans control the White House and the Congress, that Congress should just do whatever the president wants. But that’s not how our government’s set up.”
In another comment reported by NBC News, Massie said Republicans were watching closely to see whether lawmakers who challenged Trump “could win an election.”
The Kentucky result now joins a growing list of Trump-backed victories in Republican primaries across states including Indiana and Louisiana.

NBC News reported that Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who previously voted to convict Trump after the January 6 Capitol attack, also suffered a major political setback this week after Trump-backed candidates advanced in that race.
For Trump, the defeat of Thomas Massie may stand out as one of the most personal victories yet in his ongoing effort to tighten his hold over the Republican Party.
