The iconic Kentucky Derby, one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the world, will be moved to a different track. Churchill Downs has suspended all racing operations due to a string of unusual incidents, leaving horse racing enthusiasts disappointed.

Churchill Downs announced the suspension of all racing operations until July 3. This move follows an "unusual" number of horse injuries and the unfortunate deaths of 12 horses since March 30. Consequently, the remainder of the Spring Meet, including the Kentucky Derby, will be held at Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky. Least to say, Churchill Downs Inc owns and operates Ellis Park as well.

Churchill Downs' CEO, Bill Carstanjen emphasized on this matter, “In addition to our commitment to providing the safest racing environment for our participants, we have an immense responsibility as the economic engine of the Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky which provides jobs and income for thousands of families every day.”

Tragedy has struck Churchill Downs with the euthanization of 12 horses due to track-related injuries. Despite extensive investigations by Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, no definitive cause or pattern has been identified.

The track's surface was deemed consistent with previous years, mitigating concerns in that regard. Nonetheless, Churchill Downs is unwilling to take any further risks with the lives of horses. Prior to this, Churchill Downs had already taken proactive steps to improve safety.
