Melania Trump

Republican lawmakers are calling for a major change at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, renaming its Opera House after the US president Donald Trump's wife and the first lady Melania Trump, as per a report. The proposal was introduced Tuesday as part of a broader spending bill for the Department of the Interior and the Environment, and but it still needs approval from the full House to be renamed, according to The New York Times report.

Why Are Lawmakers Proposing to Rename Kennedy Center Opera House?

The suggestion comes as president Trump, who skipped the Kennedy Center Honors during his first term, has taken a hands-on role in the performing arts venue in his second term, according to the report. He now chairs its board and has replaced several former US president Joe Biden appointed officials, including long-time president Deborah F. Rutter and board chair David M. Rubenstein, as reported by The New York Times. Traditionally, the first lady serves as the honorary chair of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, according to the report.

How Have Republicans Justified the Name Change?

The amendment to rename the Opera House, which also contained additional measures related to the environment, passed 33‑25 along party lines, as per The New York Times report. Representative Mike Simpson of Idaho, who leads the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, introduced the proposal, according to the New York Times report.

What Are Democrats Saying in Opposition?

Following the vote to name the theater after Melania, Simpson said that it “is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts,” as quoted in the report.

However, Democrats were quick to push back. Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine, the ranking Democrat on the House subcommittee, said that, “It’s just another assault in this whole lineup of the president taking control of the Kennedy Center,” as quoted by The New York Times report. She also said that, “It seems outrageous to me. There’s no public consensus around this. It also leads me to wonder, does the president plan to rename the whole Kennedy Center after himself?,” as quoted in the report.

What Is the Opera House?

The Opera House, which has more than 2,300 seats, is the Kennedy Center’s second-largest theater, according to the report. It serves as the annual stage for the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, the nation’s top award recognizing lifelong contributions to American performing arts, as reported by The New York Times.

Could Renaming the Opera House Impact Fundraising?

Traditionally, naming rights is granted after substantial philanthropic donations, often over $100 million, which has raised concerns that the new name could limit the center’s fund-raising opportunities, according to the report.

How Has Donald Trump’s Involvement Changed the Kennedy Center?

Trump has argued that the Kennedy Center’s lineup needs a makeover, in last February, he posted on social media demanding “NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA — ONLY THE BEST," as quoted by The New York Times.

When Melania and the US president attended the opening night performance of “Les Misérables" in June, the drag queens had showed up in protest, according to the report. Then, later that month, five Democratic senators even hosted a gay pride concert at one of the theaters in the center, as reported by The New York Times.

The rename proposal coincides with Trump’s recent signing of the sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which included more than $250 million in funding for the Kennedy Center, which is about six times the amount its usually get from the government, according to the report.
