Five-time Grammy-nominated singer Kelsea Ballerini and Outer Banks actor Chase Stokes have split after nearly three years together, just two days after Chase shared a heartfelt birthday tribute to Kelsea on social media, according to PEOPLE.

In the Instagram post, Chase, 32, wrote: "although you keep saying you’re not excited for 32, id say I'm lookin forward to more of this," alongside a carousel of photos showing the pair on date nights, relaxing at home, and joking around on a private plane. He added: "happy birthday my love."

Fans were stunned by the breakup news, with some taking to the comments to voice their confusion. One user wrote: “Guys I need answers. Who else is here looking for ANSWERS!?”

So, why Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes have broken up

Although much has not been revealed so far, from the explanation sources gave to PEOPLE, Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes reportedly tried to make their relationship work but couldn’t in the end.

Sources close to the couple told People: “They’re two adults who gave it their all and tried to do everything they could to make it work.” They added that the two “ultimately couldn’t” make it work. “It happens,” they further said.

What Stokes said about Ballerini

In a September 2024 interview with People, Stokes spoke about the effort he put into keeping their relationship strong. “If we need to make the effort to show up when one's across the country, we do it. The amount of effort that we put into our careers, we should be doubling that in our personal lives,” he said. In January 2023, rumors of a romantic relationship between them arose.

Ballerini, speaking to Women’s Health in October 2024, described how her album Patterns captured the “nuances” of falling in love with Stokes. In a cover story with People earlier this year, she also reflected on her approach to relationships.

“I look at love really practically now, and somehow it’s my favorite version of it," she said. "I didn’t really have an example of what a solid relationship looked like in my developmental years. I learned the hard way."
