Katie Ledecky denies Summer McIntosh history in epic 800m freestyle showdown at World Championships

Veteran swimmer Katie Ledecky cemented her legacy at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships by winning her seventh consecutive world title in the 800m freestyle, holding off rising star Summer McIntosh in a thrilling showdown in Singapore. The 18-year-old McIntosh was aiming to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win five gold medals in a single world championships, but the American veteran proved too strong, touching the wall first in a commanding performance.

Ledecky’s victory not only extends her decade-long dominance in the 800m but also denies McIntosh a slice of history. With this win, Ledecky further solidifies her status as one of the greatest distance swimmers of all time.



The 800m freestyle has long been Ledecky’s signature event, with the Maryland native capturing gold in it at each of the last four Olympic Games - making her the only woman ever to do so. She now also holds an unprecedented seven consecutive world titles in the 800m, a streak that began at the 2013 World Championships.


Ledecky, a decorated veteran with 14 Olympic medals - nine of them gold - continues to build on her legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats. McIntosh, meanwhile, has rapidly risen to prominence, making her mark at the Paris Olympics with an impressive haul of three golds and a silver.


Ledecky, 28, and McIntosh, 18, each breezed through their qualifying heats to set up a highly anticipated showdown in the 800m freestyle final.

The race more than lived up to expectations, with Ledecky and McIntosh - swimming side by side in lanes 3 and 4 - delivering a dramatic showdown. But the biggest twist came from Australia’s Lani Pallister, who turned the anticipated duel into an electrifying three-way battle.

McIntosh held a slight edge with 100 meters to go, but Ledecky surged in the final stretch to claim victory in 8:05.62. Pallister pushed her to the limit, finishing just behind in 8:05.98, while McIntosh took third in 8:07.29.
