Kathy Whitworth: First woman golfer to earn $1 million dies at 83
Kathy Whitworth, America's most decorated professional golfer, died at the age of 83, according to the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Throughout her career, Whitworth won 88 professional tournaments, including six major championships.

Famous American golfer Kathy Whitworth, who won on the LPGA Tour for nearly a quarter-century, died on Christmas Eve, confirmed by her longtime partner. Whitworth, the first woman golfer to earn $1 million, was 83. The cause of her death has not been made official, as of now.
Whitworth collapsed and died at a neighbourhood Christmas party in Flower Mound, Texas, according to Christina Lance, an LPGA spokeswoman.
Her partner, Betty Oddle, said she passed away while celebrating Christmas with friends and family. In a statement released by the LPGA Tour, Oddle said Kathy left this world the way she lived her life – loving, laughing and making memories.
Throughout her career, Whitworth won 88 professional tournaments, including six major championships.

Whitworth who loved winning more than anything used to say that winning never gets old for her. The only thing missing from her career was the U.S open. In a profile for the World Golf Hall of Fame, she confessed she would have traded being the first millionaire for winning the Open.

Kathy Whitworth was born in Monahans, Texas, and grew up in Abilene, Texas. She started playing golf at the age of nine, and by the time she was 13, she was the top-ranked junior golfer in Texas. Whitworth turned professional in 1958, at the age of 18, and won her first professional tournament, the Amarillo Open, in 1959.
In addition to her success on the golf course, Whitworth was also involved in numerous charitable endeavours. She founded the Kathy Whitworth Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to junior golfers, and she also supported various children's charities.
