Kate Forbes declares candidacy for SNP leadership and Scotland's first minister after Nicola Sturgeon announcement

Kate Forbes has declared her intention to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as the leader of the Scottish National Party and become Scotland's first minister. She will cut short her maternity leave following the birth of her first child to enter the race, where she will compete against health secretary Humza Yousaf and MSP Ash Regan. The MSP representing Skye, Lochaber, and Badenoch declared her candidacy for the leadership position in a video released on Monday morning, saying, "Friends in the SNP, our nation and our movement are at a major crossroads. The choices that we make in the next few weeks will have a profound impact on our future and on our children's future. I can't sit back and watch our nation thwarted on the road to self-determination.”

"Our small, independent neighbours enjoy wealthier, fairer, and greener societies - and so should we. We urgently need to unleash the full talent of the SNP, the wider Yes movement and the country at large," Forbes said.


"We need to choose strong, competent leadership to deliver independence - the leadership that I can offer. I believe we need someone who can unite our party and our movement. I'm a unifier," Forbes said.


She further adds that she will continue to reach out and listen so that every member feels valued. "I am that leader and I want to lead our party into better days, with integrity and commitment, for the sake of your children and my children. Thank you," she said.

After Ms. Sturgeon's unexpected announcement of resignation last week, the hunt for a new leader for the SNP has commenced. Several prominent members of the party have already declined to participate in the race, including SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown, Deputy First Minister John Swinney, Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, Ukraine Minister Neil Gray, Environment Minister Mairi McAllan, and Scottish Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson.

Mr. Robertson, who represents Edinburgh Central, expressed that he had received "encouragement by many" to run, but decided against it due to his responsibility as a father of two young children, citing the significant commitment required.

In 2020, Ms. Forbes gained prominence after being unexpectedly called upon to deliver the Scottish budget at short notice when her predecessor, Derek Mackay, resigned amid scandal.

However, some have expressed concerns that the MSP, who is a member of the Free Church of Scotland, may not see eye to eye with the party on certain social issues, such as gender reforms that have been met with controversy and were blocked by the UK government.
