The departed creative director of Chanel, Chloé and Fendi will be at the centre of the charity and exhibition in New York. The gala in May will celebrate Karl Lagerfeld's 65-year career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The idea was born post-Lagerfeld's death in 2019, said Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue America, honorary co-chair of the exhibition. Anna Wintour said Karl Lagerfeld would have been slightly concerned if his clothes were displayed in a museum. She added how she knew him as an intelligent merchant king and a good reader.





This event was rescheduled from its original 2021 date due to the Covid pandemic. It focuses on the transformation of Lagerfeld's sketches into 3D creations.

One hundred fifty garments from the designer's career will be displayed, including his work for Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld label, and Balmain and Patou.

Karl Lagerfeld's clothes may have been inspired by his black and white uniform and his sayings about fashion.

The clothes at the gala will nod to Karl Lagerfeld's tentacular reach, whether inspired by or designed by Karl Lagerfeld. It is expected that Pharell Williams would be the celebrity host for this particular event. He often wore the designer for major events.

It is the third time the Met has hosted a designer show, following Alexander McQueen (died 2010) in 2011 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.
