Ralph Macchio has returned to the Karate Kid film series. After 36 years away from the big screen, he reprises his role as Daniel LaRusso in Karate Kid: Legends. The movie also features Jackie Chan.

What Ralph Macchio Has to Say

Macchio spoke at the Karate Kid: Legends premiere in New York. He told The Hollywood Reporter that his decision to return was not immediate. He had discussions with the studio. At the time, he was still working on Cobra Kai. He wanted to understand how the new film would fit into his character’s journey.

The story in Karate Kid: Legends takes place three years after Cobra Kai. Macchio said Daniel is in a different phase of his life. He said the character has become more like Mr. Miyagi. Now, Daniel helps others, continuing the legacy of his teacher.

Connecting Two Generations

Macchio said he was interested in linking his films to Jackie Chan’s version. Chan played Mr. Han in the 2010 remake. Macchio explained that Mr. Han knew Mr. Miyagi. This connection allowed the new story to bridge both timelines.

Macchio said this new chapter respects the earlier stories. He believes the franchise works well when it stays true to the characters. He tries to protect his character and act with care. He believes the new film does the same.

Working with Jackie Chan

Macchio said he felt nervous sparring with Jackie Chan. He acknowledged Chan’s skill level. Still, he enjoyed the challenge.

Now that Cobra Kai has ended, the franchise is focusing on the films. Karate Kid: Legends is the sixth movie in the series. Macchio said he is open to future projects. But he will only return if the story stays honest and true to the characters.
